Professional Editing

I’ve wanted to be an editor ever since middle school, so taking ENG 777: Professional Editing with John Turner in Spring 2022 was a great experience. Of course, it made me reminisce back to ENG 377 with Tracy Dalton and all of the editing knowledge I learned then, but it was beneficial to build on that and work with a client to create a style sheet and update their manual.

ENG 777: Professional Editing

One of our major assignments in this class was the client editing project, to practice all we’d learned in class so far. This was also my first time working with a client who I didn't already know. I was referred to the Bear Pantry after hearing they might need some help, so I chose to edit the first 10 pages of their Standard Operating Procedures manual.  The document had been jumbled by multiple authors and editors over the course of a few years, so it was incredibly satisfying to comb through the content with the levels of edit. I often referred to our class text, The Copyeditor's Handbook by Aimy Eishon, then also Grammar Snobs are Great Big Meanies by June Casagrande, and The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. All of these materials were essential for keeping me on track with high-level editing.

I'm a very detail-oriented person, so I loved correcting inconsistencies with items such as: bullet points, abbreviations, information grouping, and so forth. I met with my contact at the beginning of the process, then emailed back and forth several times whenever I had questions. This was a great opportunity to practice real-world application of how to professionally communicate with a client. Overall, this project went smoothly and it was a positive experience.

ENG 777: Professional Editing

After conferring with the client, this is the style sheet that I produced. It was part of the assignment to include a style sheet with the client editing project and was also necessary in my case because I wasn't able to edit the entire Bear Pantry manual for my class assignment. This style sheet ensured that whoever edited the manual after me would stay consistent with the edits I had already made, making the document's appearance and readability much smoother.
